Rep. Sherman Joins FHLBank San Francisco at San Fernando Valley Foreclosure Prevention Workshop

Van Nuys, CA-The Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco (FHLBank San Francisco) sponsored a foreclosure prevention workshop for San Fernando Valley residents on Saturday, December 5, 2009, with Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-27) attending as a special guest.

The event, which attracted nearly 100 people, enabled homeowners facing foreclosure to receive advice from housing counselors certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Housing counselors offered one-on-one consultations to attendees with mortgage payment problems and also helped potential first-time homebuyers better understand their home purchase options in the current market.

“I want to thank the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco and all the sponsors for hosting this important workshop for the San Fernando Valley,” said Congressman Sherman. “I am working hard in Congress to help Valley residents stay in their homes. Valley residents have been hit hard by the foreclosure crisis and this workshop provided an opportunity for homeowners to receive one-on-one assistance from housing counselors to help modify their loans.”

Lawrence H. Parks, Senior Vice President for External Affairs for FHLBank San Francisco, noted that Congressman Sherman has been a leader in supporting policies that will help families of all income levels survive the housing crisis.

“Rep. Sherman is known in Washington for having an independent voice. He evaluates public policy on its merit. He is not swayed by which political party proposed it, but by what is best for the families in his district,” Mr. Parks said. “He is consistent in his support for working families and finds ways to help them continue to enjoy the American dream of homeownership.”

In addition to FHLBank San Francisco, several local organizations—the Southland Regional Association of Realtors, Los Angeles County NeighborWorks Center for Foreclosure Solutions, and Homes Saved by Faith—were also sponsors.

“We believe it is important for homeowners to receive good advice on how to prevent foreclosures,” Mr. Parks said. “The most important thing is for the homeowner to communicate with their lender. That is often the first step in working out arrangements that allow families to stay in their homes. FHLBank San Francisco is pleased to help families understand their options.”
